Here the 60 songs showcased or referenced in the film are cut down to 16 and we kick off with the film’s scene-setting motif, Cannonball Adderley’s Mercy, Mercy, Mercy – from there to Elmore James (Dust My Broom) and Joe Cuba (Bang! Bang!) and then we get the montage moments, songs like Billy Joel’s Movin’ Out rubbing up against John Barry’s Goldfinger theme, Malcolm McLaren’s Double Dutch and Romeo Void’s Never Say Never – and though some of these are a bit jarring against the likes of Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Castor Bunch, Bo Diddley, Allen Toussaint and Ahmad Jamal it’s as it was in the movie, whisking us off through drug-fuelled scene, across continents via boats and planes. Judges want to know how the child will be educated inside the temple and how examinations will be held. And though this isn’t quite as good as his classic film soundtracks it does come close, at times, to the soundtrack – and film – it resembles the most in Scorsese’s canon – Casino.
Martin Scorsese films typically rely on a pulsing, driving rock’n’roll soundtrack – hints of the jazz and blues that have informed classic rock’n’roll too of course.
